Coexist

While walking around, I occasionally see the “Coexist” bumper sticker.  This sticker manipulates the symbols of various religions into the word “Coexist” in order to show that the religions should do exactly that.

Whenever I see differing land uses peacefully coexisting (as in some of the photos in this album, which shows high-rises next to smaller buildings) I wonder whether a similar sentiment might apply to land use.  American zoning is often based on the assumption that only identical buildings can be near each other- but in neighborhoods built before zoning, taller and smaller buildings, as well as residential and commercial uses, seem to coexist quite amicably.
